The Royal Burgh of Stirling is a very popular destination when visiting Scotland and one of the highlights it the National Wallace Monument. This is a fun and informative attraction to add to your tour itinerary when visiting Scotland.
The Wallace Monument Tour
The Wallace Monument tour is a unique opportunity to explore the legend of Sir William Wallace, a real-life 13th-century Scottish warrior and freedom fighter. William Wallace is such an important figure in Scottish history and the monument is testament to that.
If you have the energy to climb the monument’s 246 steps, you will be awarded with fantastic views to Stirling Castle and the surrounding area. But don’t worry about the steps, as there are exhibitions on every floor that provide great historical information and a welcome breather on your journey to the top. It has a superb audio-visual show about the Battle of Stirling Bridge and William Wallace’s life.
The Wallace Monument stands on the shoulder of Abbey Craig, a hilltop overlooking Stirling. The 220ft tower was completed in 1869 and is an outstanding visitor attraction in Stirling.
Braveheart
William Wallace or ‘Braveheart’ and his small army, famously defeated the large English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in the year 1297.
‘Braveheart’ was of course played by Mel Gibson in an epic Hollywood version of Scottish history, and as entertaining as it was (one of my favourite movies) definitely not very accurate. But, we won! So its okay!!

How to get to the Wallace Monument
The Wallace Monument is on a hill overlooking Stirling. Stirling is ideally situated about an hour from both Edinburgh and Glasgow and a real highlight on a Scotland day tour. As such, we recommend adding Stirling to your bespoke tour of Scotland itinerary. Your Scottish Guided Tour guide will take you to all the highlights of Stirling including Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument.
Alternatively, Stirling can be reached by a regular train service from both Glasgow and Edinburgh. After arriving in Stirling, the local bus or a taxi can take you to the National Wallace Monument.
On a Scottish Guided Tour, we park in the car park next to the Legends cafe which is great for lunch, coffee or a snack. From here, there are 2 options to get to the top of the hill where the monument sits. The easy option is to take the complimentary bus but possibly the more rewarding option, if you are able, is to take the 15-minute hike up the steep path.
